Game description:

Final Fantasy IV is a landmark 1991 role-playing game originally released for the SNES that shifted the genre toward deeply character-driven storytelling. Following the dark knight Cecil as he questions his kingdom’s ruthless military expansion, the game introduced a fixed cast of distinct characters with specific classes, a departure from the customizable parties of its predecessors. It also famously debuted the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, adding real-time urgency to turn-based combat that would define the series for decades.

How to Play

Navigate the world, manage your party’s equipment, and survive random encounters using the standard SNES controls. Use the Arrow keys (D-pad) to move, Z (A) to interact and confirm menu choices, X (B) to cancel, and Enter (Start) to pause. During combat, the ATB gauges determine when each character can act.

Tips

  • Row placement matters: Keep your physically weak spellcasters in the back row to halve the physical damage they take, while keeping your main attackers up front.
  • Anticipate healing: Because spells take time to cast in the ATB system, start casting your healing spells on characters who are about to take heavy damage, rather than waiting for them to be nearly defeated.
  • Utilize Cecil’s darkness carefully: As a Dark Knight early in the game, Cecil’s Darkness ability damages all enemies but drains his own health. Have a white mage ready to patch him up.
