Released by SNK in 1991 for the arcade, Fatal Fury: King of Fighters is a landmark 2D fighting game that introduced players to the fictional city of South Town. As the first entry in the long-running series, it uniquely allows players to choose from only three fightersโTerry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashiโas they enter the King of Fighters tournament to defeat crime boss Geese Howard. The game is particularly notable for debuting the series’ signature two-plane battle system, allowing fighters to jump between foreground and background planes to dodge attacks.
How to Play
The objective is to defeat a series of opponents in one-on-one martial arts combat. In the browser, use the Arrow keys to move your character, jump, and crouch. Press Z for punch, X for kick, and C for throw. For arcade navigation, use Shift to insert coins and Enter to start the game.
Tips
- A key defensive strategy is mastering the plane shift; press the punch and kick buttons together to dodge into the background and avoid heavy attacks.
- Each of the three playable characters has unique special moves performed with specific joystick motions. For example, Terry Bogard’s Power Wave is executed by rolling from down to forward and pressing punch.
- In two-player mode, players can occasionally team up to fight an AI opponent in a two-on-one handicap match before facing off against each other.
