Fantasy Zone is a classic side-scrolling shooter released by Sega for the Sega Master System in 1986. Often credited as one of the first “cute ’em up” games, it breaks from traditional genre conventions by letting players fly in both directions freely to explore colorful, surreal worlds. You control the sentient spaceship Opa-Opa, battling bizarre enemies and collecting dropped coins to purchase weapon upgrades, faster engines, and powerful bombs from in-game shops.
How to Play
Your objective in each level is to destroy all the enemy bases to trigger the boss fight. Once the boss is defeated, you advance to the next stage. Avoid enemy fire and make sure to collect as many dropped coins as possible to spend at the shop balloons that occasionally appear.
- Move: Arrow Keys
- Fire Weapon (Button 1): Z
- Drop Bomb (Button 2): X
- Start/Pause: Enter
Tips for Fantasy Zone
- Prioritize buying a speed upgrade (like the Big Wings or Jet Engine) as your first purchase, as Opa-Opa’s default speed is quite slow.
- Weapon upgrades have a limited time or ammunition limit. Save your strongest purchases, like the 7-Way Shot or Heavy Bomb, for boss encounters.
- Hover near enemy bases to collect the coins they drop immediately, as they disappear quickly if they fall off the screen.
