Game description:

Fantasy Zone is a classic, vibrant side-scrolling shoot ’em up released for the Arcade by Sega in 1986. Steering away from the grim sci-fi themes of its peers, it introduced a surreal, pastel-colored world where you pilot the sentient ship Opa-Opa. Instead of auto-scrolling, the game lets you fly freely left or right to hunt down enemy bases, collecting dropped coins to spend on temporary weapon and engine upgrades at hidden shops.

How to play

Your goal is to destroy all the enemy bases in each stage to summon the level’s boss, while avoiding enemy fire and colliding with hazards. Use the arrow keys to fly Opa-Opa in any direction. Press the primary fire button to shoot your twin blasters, and drop bombs with the secondary button on ground targets.

Tips

  • Collect coins quickly before they disappear, as purchasing engine speed upgrades early makes dodging projectiles much easier.
  • Keep in mind that bought weapons like the 7-Way Shot or Heavy Bomb have limited uses or time, so save them for boss encounters or overwhelmingly crowded sections.
