Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa (System 16C, PS2 Data File) is M2’s 2008 “what if” arcade reimagining of Sega’s 1987 Master System sequel, built for the Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 33: Fantasy Zone Complete Collection on PS2. It’s designed to pass as a genuine period arcade release — carrying a 1987 copyright and no M2 credit — even though it was made two decades later specifically for this fictional “System 16C” arcade board. Like the rest of the Fantasy Zone series, it’s a cute ’em up: you fly Opa-Opa, a small round living spaceship, through brightly coloured, freely scrolling levels that wrap around like Defender rather than forcing you forward.
How to Play
Fly freely in any direction, shooting down enemies and enemy bases scattered across the terrain for the coins they drop. Spend those coins at the in-level shop to buy stronger shots, a limited supply of screen-clearing bombs, and extra speed, then clear the zone’s boss to move on. This remake replaces the original’s separate zones with two parallel worlds, the Bright Side and the Dark Side, reached through portals; the Dark Side is tougher but pays off better.
- Movement: Arrow Keys
- Shot: Z
- Bomb: X
- Insert Coin: Shift (or 5)
- Start: Enter (or 1)
Tips
- Spend your coins at the shop as soon as you can afford a useful upgrade — carrying a big balance into a boss fight does you no good if you get shot down first.
- Save your limited bombs for bases and enemies your basic shot can’t clear fast enough, rather than burning them on easy targets.
- Get comfortable clearing the Bright Side before diving into the Dark Side; it’s the more forgiving of the two worlds and a better place to build up your shop purchases.
