Family Jockey is a fast-paced horse racing simulation released by Namco for the Famicom in 1987. Taking a top-down perspective, you guide your jockey and horse through a series of increasingly difficult turf and dirt races. Rather than just managing stats, the game plays like an action title where you must actively switch lanes, dodge obstacles, and time your jumps over hurdles to cross the finish line first.
How to Play
The objective is to qualify for the next race by placing highly while managing your horse’s stamina. Use the Arrow keys to steer your horse and switch lanes. Press Z to use your whip for a burst of speed (A button), and press X to jump over hurdles (B button). Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Tips
- Watch your stamina: Overusing the whip will quickly drain your horse’s energy, slowing you down drastically. Save your sprints for the final stretch.
- Collect stars: Grab the star icons scattered across the track to replenish your stamina, but be careful to avoid the skulls which will penalize you.
- Pace your jumps: Mistiming a jump over a hurdle will cause you to stumble, losing valuable speed and momentum.
