Evil Stone is an obscure and challenging overhead-view beat ’em up and platforming game, developed by Spacy Industrial and released for arcades in 1990. Built on unauthorized Taito L System hardware, the game casts you as a warrior tasked by the heavens to battle gods and demons from Hell. What sets it apart is its precarious setting: instead of walking on solid ground, all gameplay takes place on a vertically scrolling grid of floating stones.
How to Play
Your objective is to defeat waves of demonic enemies while navigating the floating platforms. Uniquely, there is no traditional health bar; taking hits knocks you backward, and the primary way to die is being pushed into the void below. Use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X to attack and jump, and Shift or Enter to insert coins and start.
Tips
- Double Jump: You can press the jump button twice in succession to leap across larger gaps between the stones.
- Charge Your Attack: Holding down the attack button unleashes a more powerful strike. By collecting power-ups, this charge attack becomes a long-range projectile that is highly effective against bosses.
- Mind the Edges: Since enemies cannot kill you with damage alone, prioritize your positioning. Avoid fighting near the edges of platforms to prevent being knocked into the abyss.
