JonBound: Dark Future is a pioneering ROM hack of EarthBound for the SNES, created by Blue Antoid (Jonathan Otis) and released in 2001. As one of the earliest full-length EarthBound hacks ever completed, it was built before modern map and graphics editing tools existed. The game follows the general structure of the original classic but introduces an entirely new scenario, original characters, and different enemies, all stitched together with an improvised, eccentric style that helped launch the game’s modern modding community.
How to Play
The game plays like a traditional 16-bit RPG, featuring turn-based combat and overworld exploration. Standard SNES controls apply: use the D-pad to move, A to check your surroundings or talk to NPCs, and B to cancel out of menus. In the browser, these map to the arrow keys for movement, X and Z for A/B, and Enter/Shift for Start/Select.
Tips
- Because this hack was created in 2001 before advanced editing tools were available, the difficulty scaling and enemy encounters can be uneven. Save your progress often.
- Take the time to talk to everyone. The charm of JonBound lies in its highly eccentric dialogue and weird scenarios that diverge completely from standard EarthBound.
