The Dynastic Hero is a side-scrolling action-RPG platformer released for the TurboGrafx-CD in 1994 by Hudson Soft. Originally developed by Westone, the game is a complete visual overhaul of the Sega Genesis classic Wonder Boy in Monster World. Due to licensing restrictions at the time, the original characters were swapped out for a colorful insect-themed cast, putting you in the shoes of a heroic beetle named Dyna. Despite the new coat of paint, it retains the excellent interconnected level design, satisfying combat, and light RPG progression of the original, while upgrading the experience with a fantastic redbook audio CD soundtrack.
How to Play
Your objective is to guide Dyna through a sprawling world, defeating enemies to earn gold and purchasing better equipment to survive tougher areas. The controls are straightforward: use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move around and enter doors, Button II (Z) to attack with your sword or spear, and Button I (X) to jump. You can access your inventory to manage your equipped gear and magic spells using the Run button (Enter).
Tips
- Return to towns often when you have accumulated enough gold; buying new armor and weapons is the primary way to increase your power and survivability.
- Don’t forget that your shield is functionalโsimply stand still without attacking to automatically block incoming enemy projectiles.
- Magic spells deal significant damage and are best saved for boss encounters rather than used on standard enemies.
