Donkey King Jr. is a 1982 arcade bootleg of Nintendo’s classic climbing platformer Donkey Kong Jr., produced by an unlicensed manufacturer and distributed under an altered title. As with most bootlegs of the era, the gameplay closely mirrors the original: you guide Junior up vines and chains across a series of screens, working to free his father Donkey Kong from the cage where Mario has imprisoned him.
How to Play
Your objective is to climb to the top of each screen while avoiding Snapjaws â snapping creatures that lurk in the water and climb chains after you â and Nitpickers, birds that swoop down from above. Grab the keys found along the vines to unlock the locks holding Donkey Kong’s cage on the final screen. In your browser, standard arcade controls apply:
- Move / Climb: Arrow keys
- Jump: Z
- Insert coin: Shift
- Start: Enter
Tips
- Time your jumps over Snapjaws: they climb the same chains you do, so jump past them rather than waiting for an opening.
- Watch for sparking chain links on later screens: touching one costs a life just like an enemy would.
- Grab keys in order: you must collect both keys before the locks on Donkey Kong’s cage will open, so don’t rush past one to dodge an enemy.
