Game description:

Dirty Racing (1993) is a top-down 2D racing game originally developed by Gremlin Interactive and released in Japan for the Game Boy by Jaleco. Later released in the West as part of the Race Days compilation, the game sets itself apart with its overworld event selection and chaotic racing mechanics. Players face off against three opponents on hazardous tracks, earning points to spend on crucial vehicle upgrades.

How to Play

The goal is to place first in top-down races to earn points, which can be spent on engine upgrades, new tires, and nitro boosts to stay competitive. In the browser, the Game Boy controls map to the Arrow Keys for steering, Z for accelerating (A button), X for braking/reverse (B button), and Enter/Shift for Start/Select.

Tips

  • Upgrade Wisely: Prioritize tire upgrades early on, as the slippery track surfaces make cornering extremely difficult with the starter vehicle.
  • Ram the Walls: Colliding with walls can trigger random events; while sometimes hazardous, these can also grant unexpected speed boosts or free repairs if you are falling behind.
