Game description:

Diddy Kong Racing is a 1997 kart racer developed and published by Rare for the Nintendo 64. Rather than sticking to simple circuit racing, it wraps its tracks in an adventure structure: Diddy Kong and a cast of animal friends explore an overworld hub, unlocking themed race worlds as they go, on their way to a final showdown with the game’s alien antagonist, Wizpig, who has enslaved the island’s four guardians — Tricky the Triceratops, Bluey the Walrus, Bubbler the Octopus, and Smokey the Dragon — and forced them to race in his place.

How to play

Races come in three vehicle types — car, hovercraft, and plane — and each track is built for one of them, so switching vehicle is part of learning a course. Steer with the analog control stick, accelerate with A, and brake or reverse with B; the Z trigger fires whatever item balloon you’re currently holding, L and R swap between available vehicles where a track allows it, and the C-buttons adjust the camera and toggle the on-screen speedometer. Collect balloons on the track to power up offensive or defensive items, and beat a course’s target time or place to unlock the next race and, eventually, a shot at Wizpig himself. Beyond the main circuits, the Silver Coin Challenge has you replay tracks hunting down eight hidden coins instead of just racing for position.

Tips

  • Learn each track’s vehicle before worrying about the racing line — hovercraft and plane courses handle very differently from the car tracks and punish car-style braking habits.
  • Save item balloons for the moments they matter most (a straightaway attack or a defensive block near the finish) rather than firing the instant you pick one up.
  • If a race feels close, prioritize finishing top of the pack first and come back for the Silver Coin Challenge on that track afterward — hunting coins while also racing to win is much harder than doing them separately.
