Crystalis is a fast-paced action RPG developed by SNK for the NES in 1990. Set in a post-apocalyptic world a century after a devastating war, you awaken from cryogenic sleep to stop the evil Draygon. The game blends fluid, top-down exploration and combat with an elemental magic system where you collect and charge swords of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder to exploit enemy weaknesses.
How to Play
Your objective is to find the four elemental swords and combine them into Crystalis to save the world. Move your character with the arrow keys. Attack enemies with the B button (X key) and use equipped items or magic with the A button (Z key). Press Enter (Start) to open your inventory and equip weapons, and Shift (Select) to view your status. Hold the attack button to charge your elemental swords for a powerful projectile strike.
Tips
- Enemies have specific elemental immunities and weaknesses. If your attacks aren’t dealing damage, try switching your equipped sword.
- Experience points dramatically increase your max health, defense, and damage output. Taking time to grind a few levels early on makes tough areas much more manageable.
- Pay attention to townsfolk; you will often need specific items like the Alarm Flute or Telepathy Ring to progress past obstacles or communicate with certain NPCs.
