Game description:

Released in 1983 by Exidy, Crossbow: The Legend of William Tell is an action shooter originally designed as a light gun arcade game and later ported to DOS. Instead of directly controlling the protagonists, you act as an unseen protector. Your goal is to guide a group of adventurers safely across perilous landscapes by shooting down hazards, enemies, and traps before they can harm your party.

How to play

Your adventurers walk across the screen automatically. You must move your crosshair and shoot any threats in their path, such as falling rocks, attacking creatures, and enemy projectiles. Aim and shoot using your mouse, or use the arrow keys and Spacebar depending on the active DOS emulator mapping. If an adventurer takes a hit, they are lost, and the game ends when your entire party is defeated.

Tips

  • Memorizing the layouts is key, as the sequence of hazards in each stage remains consistent on every playthrough.
  • Prioritize fast-moving projectiles over slower enemies, as they leave you with less reaction time.
  • After completing a stage, shoot a path on the map screen to choose your next destination, letting you tackle easier routes first.
