Game description:

Critical Depth is a 1997 vehicular combat game for the PlayStation, developed by SingleTracโ€”the studio behind the original Twisted Metal. Set in the deep ocean, players choose from a roster of distinct submarine factions and battle in 3D underwater arenas to secure mysterious energy pods. It translates the frantic, weapon-heavy arena combat of its sister series into a fully omnidirectional aquatic setting.

How to Play

The objective in each level is to find and collect all the energy pods scattered around the arena, then escape through the gateway before the other factions destroy you. Controls follow the standard PlayStation layout: the D-pad steers and adjusts depth, the face buttons handle acceleration and weapons, and the shoulder buttons are used for strafing and rolling. In the browser emulator, these are mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys and surrounding letter keys (typically Z/X/A/S for face buttons and Q/W/E/R for shoulders), with Enter acting as Start.

Tips

  • Master vertical movement: Since the arenas are fully 3D, diving and surfacing quickly is crucial for dodging enemy fire and ambushing opponents.
  • Scavenge for weapons: Keep an eye out for weapon pickups scattered across the sea floor; relying only on your default blasters will leave you outgunned against heavily armored subs.
  • Protect your cargo: You drop your collected pods when taking heavy damage. If you are carrying the objective, play defensively and focus on finding the escape gateway.
