Cool Ball is a puzzle-platformer released for the Game Boy in 1991, developed by Bit Managers. Also known as Pop Up in Europe, the game challenges you to guide a constantly bouncing ball through 99 single-screen stages with themes progressing from the Big Bang to the future. The goal is straightforward but demanding: collect every item scattered across the screen to unlock the exit door while navigating hazardous terrain and dodging enemies like piranhas and swooping birds.
How to Play
You must gather every item in the level to open the exit portal. Play uses the standard Game Boy controls (mapped to Arrow keys and Z/X in the browser). Use the D-pad to steer your ball mid-air, and hold A to increase the height of your bounces. Some stages require you to collect specific toolsโlike water drops to extinguish fires, hammers to break walls, or keys to unlock passagesโto reach all the items.
Tips
- Watch your step: Many platforms are temporary and will crumble or vanish after a bounce or two. Plan your route through the level before you start committing to jumps.
- Control your height: You don’t always want maximum air. Let go of the A button to make short, precise hops when navigating tight spaces or jumping over spikes.
- Mind the surfaces: Keep an eye out for sticky or angled platforms, as these will drastically alter your bounce trajectory and can easily send you into a hazard.
