Comix Zone is a critically acclaimed action beat ’em up released for the Sega Genesis in 1995 by Sega Technical Institute. You play as Sketch Turner, a comic book artist trapped inside his own creation by the villainous Mortus. The game is famous for its unique visual style where each level is a literal comic book page; you advance by jumping between panels, tearing through the paper borders, and fighting mutants drawn into existence before your eyes.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive the mutant-filled pages of the comic and defeat Mortus to escape back to the real world. As a Genesis game played in your browser, the default controls map the D-pad to your arrow keys, with the action buttons (A, B, C) mapped to Z, X, and C. Use Enter for Start. You can pick up and use items, such as bombs and health-restoring iced tea, from your three-slot inventory.
Tips for Survival
- Use Roadkill: Sketch’s pet rat, Roadkill, can find hidden items, discover secret paths, and even electrocute enemies. Don’t forget to deploy him when you’re stuck in a panel.
- Watch your health when attacking objects: Punching static objects like doors, crates, or fans will damage Sketch. Whenever possible, use switches, explosives, or Roadkill to clear obstacles instead of your fists.
- Manage your inventory: You only have three item slots. Prioritize keeping a healing item and use throwing knives or explosives early to avoid leaving them behind.
