Game description:

Released for the PlayStation in 1997 by Psygnosis, Colony Wars is a sweeping space combat simulator that puts you in the cockpit of advanced starfighters. You play as a pilot for the League of Free Worlds, a rebel faction fighting against the tyrannical Earth Empire. What makes the experience stand out is its branching campaign structure; rather than a simple pass/fail system, completing or failing missions leads you down different narrative paths, ultimately resulting in one of several distinct endings.

How to Play

Your objective is to pilot various spacecraft through dogfights, escort missions, and capital ship assaults while managing your shields and weapon systems. In the browser, the PlayStation’s D-pad is typically mapped to the arrow keys for steering. You can accelerate and decelerate using the L and R shoulder buttons (often Q/W/E/R on the keyboard), while the face buttons (Z/X/A/S) handle firing your primary and secondary weapons, switching targets, and cycling through armaments. Keep an eye on your HUD to track incoming hostile fighters and monitor your current objective.

Tips

  • Match your weapons to the target: Anti-shield lasers are essential for stripping enemy defenses, but you need to quickly switch to physical projectiles or missiles to deal hull damage once the shields are down.
  • Manage your energy: High-powered weapons drain your ship’s energy pool rapidly. Avoid holding down the fire button blindly; instead, fire in short, accurate bursts.
  • Embrace the failures: Losing a mission isn’t necessarily game over. Following the “failure” branches offers unique missions and reveals different perspectives on the war.
