Game description:

Cobra Command is a 1984 laserdisc arcade game from Data East, released in Japan as Thunder Storm. It puts you in the cockpit of the LX-3 Super Cobra attack helicopter, moving a targeting crosshair over hand-drawn animated footage — some of it produced by Toei Animation — to shoot down enemies and react to steering cues at the right instant, in the same “interactive movie” style as Dragon’s Lair. It was designed by Yoshihisa Kishimoto, who would go on to create Kunio-kun and Double Dragon. This page is the “Japan Set 2” build, one of the alternate ROM revisions preserved for the machine alongside the original release.

How to Play

The arcade original ran on a joystick with two buttons — machine gun and missile — and required you to follow directional prompts at precise moments to dodge obstacles and survive each sequence. In the browser:

  • Arrow keys – aim the crosshair / steer
  • Z / X – machine gun / missile
  • Enter – start
  • Shift – insert coin

Tips

  • The footage and its cues play out the same way every run, so treat early attempts as scouting — memorizing what’s coming is the real skill here, not reflexes alone.
  • Missing a directional prompt is usually instant death, so react the moment a cue appears rather than waiting to be sure of it.
