Civilization II is MicroProse’s classic turn-based strategy game, successfully adapted for the PlayStation in 1999. You take on the role of an immortal leader guiding a chosen civilization from the Stone Age to the Space Age. The game demands a careful balance of city management, technological research, diplomacy, and military strategy as you compete against rival empires for global dominance.
How to Play
Your objective is to build an empire that stands the test of time, winning either by conquering all rival nations or by launching a colony ship to Alpha Centauri. In this browser-based emulation, the original PlayStation controller inputs are mapped to your keyboard. Use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move the map cursor and units. Press the X button (usually Z or X on your keyboard) to select units or confirm actions, and use the remaining face buttons to access city screens, diplomacy, and research menus. Start by founding a capital with your Settler, then explore the surrounding land to uncover resources and rival tribes.
Tips
- Change governments quickly: Your starting government, Despotism, penalizes food and resource production. Prioritize researching Monarchy or Republic to remove these penalties and accelerate your growth.
- Develop your terrain: Use Settlers to build roads around your cities. Roads not only allow your military to respond faster to threats, but they also generate extra trade, which directly boosts your science and tax income.
- Protect your borders: Roaming barbarians and aggressive neighbors will test your defenses. Build City Walls in vulnerable frontier towns to double the defensive strength of the units stationed inside.
