Game description:

Chavez II is a 1993 Sega Genesis boxing game developed by Sculptured Software and published by American Softworks Corporation. It’s a rebranded, Spanish-language version of Sculptured Software’s own Boxing Legends of the Ring (released in Japan as Final Knockout), reworked for the Mexican market around real-life champion Julio César Chávez. It keeps the original’s roster of boxing legends — Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Graziano, and James Toney — fought from an over-the-shoulder view in a Las Vegas Hilton ring.

How to Play

Chavez II offers two ways to play: Exhibition, a quick one-off bout with any boxer, and Career, where you build a fighter from scratch, pick a background that sets his starting punch power, stamina, and chin, then climb the rankings from tenth place toward a shot at Chávez himself.

Controls follow the Sega Genesis pad: the D-pad moves your boxer around the ring and doubles as your guard — hold up to protect the head, down to cover the body — while the face buttons throw your punches, with high buttons landing jabs, crosses, and uppercuts and the low punch always a body hook. Clinch with an opponent to catch your breath and recover stamina, and unleash a Super Punch when you need a fight-ending blow, though it costs a large chunk of your own stamina to throw.

Tips

  • Keep your guard up. Blocking carries no real penalty in Chavez II, so there’s rarely a reason not to have your hands up between punches.
  • Don’t pace yourself. Long combinations drain stamina, but the CPU rarely makes you pay for it, so pressing the attack beats playing it safe.
  • Save Super Punches for a staggered opponent — they cost too much stamina to throw safely against a fighter who’s still guarding well.
