CHAMP Kong is a 1996 DOS platformer by ChamProgramming that faithfully recreates and expands upon the classic arcade action of Donkey Kong. Rather than a simple port, it updates the original formula with vibrant VGA graphics, smoother movement, and a mix of the classic four arcade boards alongside brand-new custom stages. You guide the hero up structural beams and elevators to rescue the captive from the giant ape, dodging a relentless barrage of hazards along the way.
How to play
The objective is to climb to the very top of each stage while avoiding the ape’s thrown barrels, wandering fireballs, and other moving obstacles. You can run left and right, climb up and down ladders, and jump over incoming hazards. Grabbing a hammer allows you to smash barrels for a brief time, but you cannot climb ladders while holding it. Use the Arrow Keys to move and climb, and the Spacebar or Ctrl key to jump. Press ‘Right Alt’ + ‘Enter’ to toggle fullscreen.
Tips
Timing your jumps is critical, but patience on the ladders is just as importantโyou are completely vulnerable while climbing, so wait for a clear opening before stepping off. In the rivet-removing stages, try to clear the hardest-to-reach central rivets early while the enemies are sparse, saving the safer outer ones for when the screen gets crowded. Finally, keep a close eye on the barrels above you; they can unexpectedly drop down ladders instead of rolling past them.
