Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a landmark action role-playing game developed by Konami and released for the PlayStation in 1997. As the title that helped define the “Metroidvania” genre, it shifted the series from linear platforming into vast, non-linear exploration. You play as Alucard, the dhampir son of Dracula, who must navigate a sprawling, interconnected castle. Along the way, Alucard gains experience points to level up, collects a wide variety of weapons and armour, and discovers magical relics that grant new traversal abilities.
How to Play
Your main objective is to map out Dracula’s castle, defeat the dark creatures within, and uncover the true mastermind behind the fortress’s reappearance. In the browser emulator, the standard PlayStation controls apply: use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move, the face buttons (Z, X, A, S) to jump and attack, and the shoulder buttons (Q, W, E, R) for backdashing and shapeshifting. Press Start (Enter) to open your inventory menu, where you can equip gear, use items, and view your map.
Tips
- Use the backdash: Tapping the backdash button repeatedly allows Alucard to move backwards faster than his normal walking speed, which is great for traversing long hallways quickly.
- Look for breakable walls: Striking certain suspicious walls with your weapon can reveal hidden rooms containing valuable permanent health and heart upgrades.
- Experiment with spells: Even before finding the scrolls that teach them, you can cast powerful magic spells by inputting specific fighting-game style directional combinations and pressing the attack button.
