Game description:

Boogie Wings is a wildly inventive horizontal shoot ’em up released for the Arcade by Data East in 1992. Known as The Great Ragtime Show in Japan, it sets itself apart from traditional shooters with its quirky steampunk aesthetic and chaotic action. Instead of a standard spaceship, you pilot a rickety biplane equipped with a trailing hook that can grab enemies, vehicles, and scenery to use as makeshift weapons. The action gets even more frantic if your plane goes down, forcing you to fight on foot or hijack other vehicles to stay in the fight.

How to Play

The objective is to blast your way through waves of eccentric enemies and massive bosses across various steampunk-inspired stages. Maneuver your character or vehicle to dodge incoming fire and destroy targets. The default browser arcade controls use Insert Coin (mapped to Shift) and Start (mapped to Enter), with the arrow keys for movement. Use Button 1 (Z) to fire your primary weapon and Button 2 (X) to use your grab-hook. Hooked objects can be hurled at enemies for massive damage. If your biplane is destroyed, you can continue fighting on foot and jump into abandoned tanks, mechanical elephants, or other oddball vehicles found throughout the levels.

Tips

  • Master the hook: Your grappling hook is your most powerful tool. Constantly grab debris or smaller enemies to use as a shield and lob them at tougher targets.
  • Don’t panic on foot: Losing your plane isn’t the end. When running on the ground, use your maneuverability to dodge incoming fire and prioritize finding a new vehicle immediately.
  • Experiment with vehicles: Each hijackable vehicle has unique attacks and movement quirks. Learn which ones work best for specific enemy formations or boss fights.
