Bonze Adventure (known in Japan as Jigoku Meguri) is a 1988 arcade platformer developed by Taito. You play as Kackugo, a courageous Buddhist monk tasked with descending into the underworld to defeat Emma, the King of Hell. The game draws heavily on Japanese mythology, sending you through colorful but perilous levels filled with yokai, demons, and ghosts. Rather than traditional weapons, you fight using magical mala (prayer beads) to purify enemies, collecting various power-ups along the way to enhance your attacks.
How to Play
Navigate the underworld by running and jumping across platforms while fending off enemies. The default arcade controls in your browser are the Arrow Keys to move and duck, Z to throw your prayer beads, X to jump, and Shift or Enter to insert a coin and start.
Tips
- Master the beads: Your prayer beads can be upgraded by collecting colored orbs. Look out for the red orbs to increase your attack power, and blue orbs to make your beads bounce off walls.
- Watch your step: Kackugo cannot change his momentum easily while in mid-air, so time your jumps carefully over bottomless pits and moving platforms.
- Find hidden items: Throwing beads at seemingly empty spaces or walls will sometimes reveal hidden items and power-ups.
