Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold is a pioneering 1993 first-person shooter published by Apogee Software for MS-DOS. Built on an upgraded version of the Wolfenstein 3D engine, it introduced major genre advancements including textured floors and ceilings, an auto-mapping system, and friendly interactive NPCs. You play as Robert Stone, a British Intelligence agent dispatched to infiltrate six futuristic installations and stop the megalomaniacal Dr. Pyrus Goldfire from unleashing an army of genetically engineered mutants and aliens on the world.
How to play
Your objective is to navigate each level, eliminate hostile Star Institute guards and alien creatures, and find the red access card needed to unlock the elevator to the next floor.
Controls use the standard DOS keyboard layout: use the Arrow Keys to move and turn, Ctrl to fire your weapon, Space to open doors and interact with objects, and Shift to sprint. Press Tab to view the auto-map. For fullscreen mode in the browser, press Right Alt + Enter.
Tips
- Check your fire: Not everyone in the facility is hostile. Scientists wearing white lab coats are informants who will offer valuable hints, ammo, or tokens if you speak to them (Spacebar) instead of shooting them.
- Use the auto-map: The Tab key is your best friend for navigating the maze-like levels. Areas you have explored are filled in, making it easier to spot unvisited rooms or missed secret doors.
- Listen for alerts: Pay attention to the game’s audio. Guards will shout when alerted to your presence, and some alien enemies drop from ceiling vents with a distinct sound.
