Released for the Sega Master System in 1986, Black Belt is a classic side-scrolling beat ’em up that originated in Japan as a Fist of the North Star tie-in. Stripped of its anime license for Western release, the game casts you as a martial artist named Riki fighting through endless waves of thugs and martial arts masters to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend, Kyoko.
How to Play
The objective is to survive linear side-scrolling levels, culminating in a one-on-one fight against a stage boss. Movement is handled with the D-pad (mapped to the arrow keys in your browser), while Button 1 (Z) punches and Button 2 (X) kicks. You can also jump by pressing Up or crouch by pressing Down to dodge high attacks.
Tips
- Boss Finishers: You cannot defeat stage bosses simply by draining their health. You must wait for an opening and land a specific sequence of strikes to trigger the final blow.
- Power-ups: Keep an eye out for flying items that occasionally pass across the screen. Catching them will restore a portion of your health or grant brief invincibility.
