Game description:

Bionic Commando is a 1987 action-platformer by Capcom for the NES, built around one design decision that sets it apart from every other platformer of its era: the hero, Rad Spencer, cannot jump. Instead of a jump button he carries a spring-loaded bionic arm — a grappling hook he fires at ledges and ceilings to swing across gaps, haul himself up cliffs, and navigate terrain no ordinary soldier could cross.

How to Play

Between stages an overhead strategic map lets you plot your route through enemy territory. Neutral zones on the map contain friendly contacts willing to trade items or share information — entering them guns blazing is a mistake. Scattered through each action stage are enemy radio units: pick them up to intercept communications carrying mission intel and story context.

Controls (Player 1):

  • Arrow keys — move, and aim the bionic arm up or diagonally
  • X (A button) — deploy the bionic arm; press again to retract
  • Z (B button) — fire your weapon
  • Enter (Start) — pause / confirm
  • Shift (Select) — cycle weapons

To cross a gap: approach the edge, angle the D-pad diagonally up and forward, press X to hook a surface overhead, then swing across and release. The arm only latches onto surfaces above you — read each room before committing.

Tips

  • Pick up every radio unit you find. Some communications unlock new equipment or open areas on the strategic map that you would otherwise miss entirely.
  • In neutral zones, keep your weapon holstered. Firing on neutral soldiers makes the zone hostile and cuts off a supply route.
  • Timing your release matters — letting go of the arm at the peak of your swing carries you significantly farther than releasing early or late.
