Developed by SNK and released in 1989 for the NES, Baseball Stars was a groundbreaking sports title that introduced unprecedented depth to the genre. Ahead of its time, it allowed players to create their own custom teams, name individual players, and play through full league seasons, complete with stat tracking and RPG-style progression.
The objective is to win games and earn money to upgrade your custom team’s stats. The game uses standard NES controls: use the D-pad (arrow keys) to move your players or aim pitches, press A (Z key) to swing the bat or throw pitches, and use B (X key) to dive for fielding or attempt pickoffs. Press Start (Enter) to pause and Select (Shift) to call a timeout for substitutions.
When starting a custom team, avoid spreading your initial money too thin. Focus on maxing out the hitting power of one or two key batters first, or heavily invest in your starting pitcher’s stamina, which will make winning early league games much easier.
