Developed by SNK and released in 1992, Art of Fighting is a classic 16-bit fighting game for the Sega Genesis. Set in the gritty streets of South Town, the story mode follows martial artists Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia as they fight their way through the criminal underworld to rescue Ryo’s kidnapped sister, Yuri. Known for pioneering mechanics that became staples of the genre, the game features a unique energy system and large character sprites that show visible bruising as matches progress.
How to Play
Your goal is to defeat your opponent in a best-of-three martial arts tournament. Unlike other fighting games of the era, you must manage a Spirit Gauge located beneath your health. Special attacks drain this gauge, and executing specials without enough energy will result in a weaker, shorter-range attack.

Tips
- Taunt your opponent: Pressing the taunt button reduces your opponent’s Spirit Gauge, preventing them from using powerful specials.
- Charge your spirit: You can replenish your own Spirit Gauge by pressing and holding an attack button, though this leaves you completely vulnerable to incoming strikes.
- Desperation Moves: When your health bar turns red, you gain access to a hidden, high-damage super attack. These can quickly turn the tide of a losing battle.
