An Apeeling Sonic Hack is a challenge-based platformer ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, created by developer VAdaPEGA for the 2015 Sonic Hacking Contest. Instead of standard running mechanics, this concept hack removes normal directional movement entirely, forcing players to navigate the classic zones using only Sonic’s signature Super Peel-Out ability.
How to Play
Your objective is to complete the standard levels of Sonic 1 with a severely restricted movement style. Because you cannot walk normally, you must manually charge the Super Peel-Out to travel. Default browser controls for the Sega Genesis are the Arrow Keys for the D-pad, Z, X, or C to jump and charge the dash, and Enter for Start.
Tips
- Because the original levels weren’t designed for this mechanic, the hack allows you to jump mid-Peel-Out so you can clear platforming sections.
- When you hit a spring or a bumper, you temporarily regain a small amount of directional air control to prevent you from getting permanently stuck in the environment.
- Momentum is difficult to stop once started; practice short bursts of the Peel-Out for tighter sections of the map.
