Originally released by Sega in 1988, Altered Beast is a side-scrolling beat ’em up set in ancient Greece. Resurrected by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena, you must battle through hordes of undead and demonic enemies, collecting mystical spirit orbs to transform into powerful mythological beasts.
How to play
The objective is to fight your way to the end of each stage, defeating the boss to progress. Since this is an arcade title, you use the arrow keys to move, while Z, X, and C typically map to your punch, kick, and jump actions in the browser. You can attack while crouching or in mid-air, and gathering three spirit orbs on a level triggers your beast transformation.
Tips
- Always prioritize defeating the flashing white wolves, as they are the only enemies that drop the spirit orbs necessary for your transformation.
- Your beast form varies by stage (such as a werewolf, weredragon, or werebear), and each comes with unique, powerful ranged and dash attacks that make boss fights significantly easier.
- If you reach the stage boss without transforming, Neff will flee and force you to complete another loop of the level, making the game much harder.
