Released by SEGA in 1988 as a pack-in title for the Sega Genesis, Altered Beast is a side-scrolling action brawler that defined early 16-bit arcade ports. Resurrected by Zeus to save his daughter Athena from the demon god Neff, you must battle through a supernatural ancient Greece. By collecting mystical spirit orbs, your character bulks up and ultimately transforms into legendary beasts with devastating attacks.
How to play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stage and defeat Neff’s various boss forms. To survive, prioritize defeating the flashing white wolves that appear throughout the levels, as they drop spirit orbs. Collecting three orbs in a single stage triggers your beast transformation, granting you the power needed to defeat the boss. A second player can join in co-op mode for combined attacks.

Tips
- Neff will refuse to fight you and extend the stage if you reach him without transforming. Always prioritize intercepting the flashing wolves to get your three spirit orbs as quickly as possible.
- Crouching and using your kick attack is often the safest way to deal with the slow-moving zombies that emerge from the ground.
- In the second stage, the Weredragon’s electrical barrier attack makes you temporarily invincible, which is perfect for avoiding damage from the eye-stalk enemies.
