The Adventures of Bayou Billy is an ambitious action game developed by Konami for the NES in 1989. Following the survivalist Billy West as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend Annabelle from a crime boss, the game famously combines three entirely different styles of gameplay: side-scrolling beat-’em-up brawling, first-person target shooting, and fast-paced driving sequences.
How to Play
Players must master hand-to-hand combat in the swamps, survive high-speed pursuits in a jeep, and shoot their way through enemy territory. Since this game requires standard NES controls, use the Arrow keys to move or steer, Z and X for the A and B action buttons, Enter for Start, and Shift for Select. During the shooting segments, use the D-pad to move your crosshairs and press the action buttons to fire.
Tips
This release is notoriously difficult. During the beat-’em-up stages, rely heavily on your jump kick, which provides better reach and safety than standard punches. Whenever an enemy drops a weapon like a stick, whip, or gun, pick it up immediately to increase your damage output, and always keep an eye out for raw meat to restore your depleted health.
