Game description:

Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention is a tactical RPG developed by Sonic! Software Planning and published by Sega for the Genesis in 1992. You command Max, a young swordsman who assembles the Shining Force — a growing party of knights, mages, centaurs, elves, and priests — to prevent the resurrection of the Dark Dragon. The game blends turn-based grid battles with town exploration, character recruitment, and equipment management across a series of chapters.

How to play

Each chapter culminates in a battle on a grid map where you and the enemy alternate turns, moving units and choosing to attack, cast a spell, or use an item. Melee fighters must be adjacent to their target; archers and mages strike from a distance. Winning battles earns experience, and once a character reaches level 10 you can promote them to an advanced class — Knight to Paladin, Mage to Wizard — resetting them to level 1 but raising their stat ceiling considerably. Waiting until level 20 to promote yields the best starting stats in the new class.

Keyboard controls (Genesis → keyboard):

  • Arrow keys — move cursor / unit
  • S (Button A) — confirm / attack
  • X (Button B) — cancel / unit menu
  • Z (Button C) — secondary action
  • Enter (Start) — pause / menu

Tips

  • Hold promotions until level 20. Characters promoted at higher levels carry better stats into their new class; save your promotion items and push to 20 before using them.
  • Talk to every NPC in every town. Several allies only join if you trigger the right conversation, and some require finding a specific item first. The game’s chapters are sequential — missed recruits stay missed.
  • Protect your healers. Priests are the only way to revive fallen units in battle. Dead characters miss the EXP from that fight and cost gold at the church, so keep healers behind the front line and heal early rather than late.
