Game description:

Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes is a role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom, originally released in Japan in 1989 for the NEC PC-8801 before Hudson Soft brought it to the TurboGrafx-CD in 1991 (Japan) and 1992 (North America). The sixth entry in Falcom’s Dragon Slayer series, it’s the game that launched the long-running Legend of Heroes series. Set in the kingdom of Farlayne on the world of Isrenasa, it follows Prince Logan as he returns after ten years in hiding to reclaim the throne from Baron Drax, the regent who seized power after King Corwin’s death. The TurboGrafx-CD version was especially notable for its extensive voiced dialogue, an ambitious use of the CD format at the time.

How to Play

Guide Logan and the party members he recruits along the way — including Ethan, Markus, Sonia, and Giles — across an open world divided into six chapters, fighting through turn-based battles that can be played manually or handed off to a customizable auto-battle system. Move with the Arrow keys, confirm and talk to characters with Z, cancel or back out of menus with X, and open the main menu with Enter.

Tips

  • Armor is your main line of defense — most weapons only raise your attack power, so keep your party’s armor upgraded before pushing into new areas.
  • Magic is expensive relative to your income, so set auto-battle’s spell and healing thresholds carefully rather than burning MP on ordinary fights.
  • Seek out the sages scattered around Isrenasa — each one can teach a character a new spell, and every party member can learn up to seven.
