Spot is a 1990 strategy board game released for the Game Boy featuring the recognizable 7 Up mascot. Despite the character’s platforming adventures elsewhere, this title is a direct adaptation of the board game Ataxx. You compete against the computer or another player on a 7×7 grid, moving your pieces to convert your opponent’s tokens to your side and dominate the board.
How to Play
The objective is to have the most pieces on the board when all spaces are filled or when your opponent is completely wiped out. On your turn, you can move one of your pieces. Moving it one adjacent space clones the piece, leaving the original behind. Jumping it two spaces moves the piece entirely. Whenever your piece lands, any of the opponent’s pieces adjacent to the landing square instantly flip to your color.
- Controls: Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to move the cursor. Press A (Z key) to select a piece or confirm a move, and B (X key) to cancel. Press Start (Enter) to pause or access menus.
Tips
- Clone early: Moving just one space adds a new piece to the board rather than relocating an old one. This quickly builds a solid defensive wall.
- Sacrifice for a sweep: Sometimes letting your opponent take one of your pieces sets them up in a vulnerable cluster. A well-placed jump can flip several of their pieces back to you at once.
