Game description:

Donkey Kong for the Game Boy is a classic puzzle-platformer developed by Nintendo and released in 1994. While it initially appears to be a straightforward port of the original arcade hit, completing the first four levels reveals a massive, sprawling adventure spanning 97 brand new stages across diverse worlds. This game significantly expanded Mario’s moveset, introducing mechanics like the handstand, backflip, and wire-spinning that would later become staples of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

How to Play

Your objective is to guide Mario through each level to either reach Pauline or defeat Donkey Kong, collecting Pauline’s lost items along the way for bonus lives. For this Game Boy title, use the Arrow Keys (D-pad) to move, Z (A button) to jump or interact, and X (B button) to pick up objects and enemies. Press Enter for Start and Shift for Select.

Tips

  • Master the acrobatics: Mario’s new moves are essential. Press down and jump to perform a handstand, which protects you from falling objects, and jump again from the handstand for a high leap.
  • Use enemies as weapons: Unlike traditional Mario games, you can pick up many enemies by standing on them and pressing the B button, then throw them to clear a path or hit switches.
  • Look for the hammer: Just like in the arcade original, the hammer makes you temporarily invincible to enemies, but remember that you cannot climb ladders while holding it.
