Batman Forever is a 1995 side-scrolling beat-’em-up released for the Game Boy by Acclaim. Based on the blockbuster film, the game adapts the digitized graphics and fighting-game mechanics of its console counterparts into a portable brawler. Players control either Batman or Robin, fighting through the streets of Gotham City to foil the plans of Two-Face and The Riddler.
How to Play
Unlike traditional brawlers, Batman Forever relies heavily on fighting-game inputs. Most notably, jumping is performed by pressing Up on the D-pad rather than a dedicated action button. In the browser, the Game Boy’s D-pad is mapped to the Arrow keys, the A and B buttons are mapped to X and Z, and Start and Select are mapped to Enter and Shift. You will need to use specific directional combinations with your punches and kicks to execute special moves and use gadgets.
Tips
- Take time to learn the input for the grappling hook early on. The game frequently requires you to grapple to upper platforms to progress, and missing the input can leave you stuck.
- Since jumping is tied to the Up directional key, be careful when moving around the screen to avoid accidentally leaping into enemy attacks.
