Woody Pop (released in Japan as Woody Pop – Shinjinrui no Block Kuzushi) is a classic block-breaking puzzle game released for the Sega Master System in 1987. Developed by Sega, it puts a unique twist on the traditional Breakout formula by giving players a non-linear map to explore. Playing as Woody, a friendly tree spirit, you bounce a ball to clear rooms full of toys and destructible blocks. Instead of progressing through levels linearly, clearing a room reveals multiple doors at the top of the screen, allowing you to choose your own path through the sprawling toy factory.
How to Play
The objective is to break all the destructible blocks in each room without letting the ball fall past your paddle at the bottom of the screen. Move your paddle left and right to keep the ball in play and catch power-ups that drop from broken blocks. The Sega Master System controls map to the Arrow Keys for movement, and the Z or X keys to launch the ball. Press Enter to start the game.
Tips
- Carefully choose which door to take after clearing a room; the map is non-linear, and some paths are much harder than others.
- Look out for the fireball power-up, which allows your ball to burn straight through multiple blocks instead of bouncing off them.
- Watch out for the toy enemies wandering around the rooms, as hitting them will alter your ball’s trajectory in unpredictable ways.
