Released by Capcom in 1991, Mega Man 4 is an action platformer for the NES that shook up the series’ formula by introducing the chargeable Mega Buster. Alongside a new set of eight Robot Masters to defeat and weapons to steal, it forces you to master precision jumping and pattern recognition as you make your way toward a showdown with the mysterious Dr. Cossack.
How to play
Your objective is to traverse hazard-filled stages, defeat the Robot Master at the end, and claim their weapon to exploit the weaknesses of the remaining bosses. Use the Arrow Keys to move, X to jump, and Z to shoot or charge the Mega Buster, while Enter and Shift handle Start and Select.
Tips
- Hold Z to charge the Mega Buster as you navigate levels; walking into an encounter with a fully charged shot ready makes dealing with heavy enemies much easier.
- Toad Man is generally the easiest boss to tackle first. His screen-clearing rain attack can be completely prevented if you shoot him whenever he begins his dance.
- Remember that boss weapons consume energy. Save them for the specific bosses they are super effective against, and rely on your regular Buster for standard enemies.
