Metal Gear is a pioneering stealth action game published by Konami for DOS in 1987. You play as rookie special forces operative Solid Snake, tasked with infiltrating the fortified mercenary state of Outer Heaven to destroy a walking nuclear tank.
How to play
Your main objective is to navigate the enemy compound while avoiding detection by guards and security cameras. You begin the mission unarmed and must scavenge for weapons, rations, keycards, and other equipment to progress. Controls use the arrow keys for movement, Space to attack or use an item, and Enter to access your transceiver and inventory screens. Rescuing hostages hidden throughout the base increases your rank, which expands your maximum health and carrying capacity.
Tips
- Punch the walls in dead ends or suspicious rooms. If the impact makes a hollow sound, you can place a plastic explosive there to blow open a hidden doorway.
- The cardboard box is an essential tool. It hides you from cameras when you stay perfectly still, and equipping it while standing inside a delivery truck will automatically transport you to different buildings.
- Never kill a hostage. While rescuing them increases your rank, accidentally shooting one will immediately demote you and reduce your maximum health.
