Game description:

Kame no Ongaeshi: Urashima Densetsu is a 1988 action-platformer for the NES developed by Atlus and published by Hudson Soft. Released exclusively in Japan, it is the original version of the game known in the West as Xexyz. Based on the Japanese folktale of Urashima Tarล, players control Ken Urashima as he journeys to an underwater kingdom to defend it from the Machine Beast Empire. The game stands out by alternating between side-scrolling platforming stages and fast-paced, Gradius-style shoot-’em-up segments.

How to Play

In the platforming sections, you navigate environments, defeat enemies, and collect currency to purchase upgrades and weapons from shops. During the shoot-’em-up levels, gameplay shifts to a side-scrolling shooter where precise maneuvering is key. Default NES controls apply: use the D-pad to move, A to jump (in platforming mode), and B to attack or fire. In the browser, these map to your arrow keys, Z, and X.

Tips

  • Visit shops frequently to upgrade your weapons, as the late-game shooter stages become highly demanding.
  • Pay attention to enemy patterns during the shoot-’em-up sections, as they often follow predictable waves similar to arcade classics.
