Family Trainer – Jogging Race (Japan) is a sports and exercise game developed by Human and published by Bandai for the NES (Famicom). Designed to be played with the Family Trainer mat accessory (known internationally as the Power Pad), the game challenges you to compete in on-screen marathons and obstacle courses by physically running in place. It stands as an early pioneer in the interactive fitness genre, laying the groundwork for modern exercise games.
The objective is to complete various running courses while managing your stamina. Since playing in the browser means you cannot use a physical mat, the Power Pad inputs are mapped to the standard NES controls. You will need to rapidly alternate inputs to simulate the physical stepping motion. The default NES controls are the D-pad for directional movement along with the A and B buttons, which are mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys and the Z and X keys.
When simulating the mat inputs on a keyboard, finding a steady rhythm is often more effective than simply mashing keys as fast as possible. Focus on a consistent alternating pace to keep your runner moving efficiently.
