Released in 1990 by KID, Burai Fighter is an ambitious multidirectional shooter for the NES. Unlike traditional side-scrollers, you control a jetpack-equipped soldier who can aim and fire in eight different directions regardless of how the screen is moving. The game challenges you to destroy the alien Burai race by fighting through alternating forced-scrolling sections and free-roaming top-down labyrinths.
How to Play
Use the D-pad (Arrow Keys) to move in eight directions. The B button (Z) fires your current weapon. Master the firing lock mechanics: if you hold down the fire button, your character aim locks in that direction, allowing you to move freely while laying down a continuous stream of fire. The A button (X) unleashes a devastating Cobalt Bomb that clears the screen, provided you have collected enough power-up capsules.
Tips
- Lock and strafe: Holding down the fire button to lock your aim is essential for navigating narrow corridors while retreating from pursuing enemies.
- Protect your upgrades: When you lose a life, your currently equipped weapon loses all of its upgrades, but your other weapons stay at their current level. Switch weapons strategically if you know you are about to take a hit.
- Memorize the radar: At the start of the top-down maze stages, pay close attention to the radar map briefly shown on screenโit reveals the location of the enemy base you need to destroy.
