Treasure of the Rudras (Rudra no Hihou) is a 1996 role-playing game developed by Square for the Super Nintendo, presented here with the acclaimed English translation by Aeon Genesis. Set in a world with only 16 days remaining before its prophesied destruction, you experience the impending apocalypse through three intertwining character scenarios that can be played in any order. The game is celebrated for its incredible late-SNES sprite animation, exceptional soundtrack, and one of the most unique magic systems of its era.
How to Play
Combat is turn-based, but magic is handled through the innovative “Mantra” system. Instead of learning spells by leveling up, you type out words to create them. Different prefixes and suffixes determine a spell’s element, power, and whether it targets one enemy or the whole group. Standard Super Nintendo controls apply: use the D-pad to move, A to confirm/interact, and B to cancel. In the browser, these are mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys, with Z and X acting as the B and A buttons, and Enter for Start.
Tips
- Experiment with Mantras: Try typing everyday words, elemental names, or even spell names from other classic RPGs. The text-based system is incredibly flexible, and you can discover powerful magic just by guessing.
- Pacing Matters: Time progresses as you complete major story beats and travel between locations. Pay attention to the day counter, as you only have 16 days to complete each scenario.
- Cross-Scenario Impact: The actions you take in one character’s storyline can affect the others. If you leave a chest behind or alter a location, another party might encounter the consequences of that choice later.
