Breakout is a classic action game released for the Atari 2600 in 1978 by Atari, Inc. In this iconic title, you control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball upward to chip away at a wall of colorful bricks. Clearing the screen advances you to a new wall, while missing the ball costs you a life.
How to play
Keep the ball in play and destroy every brick on the screen. The ball speeds up as the game progresses, especially when it breaks through to hit the ceiling. The Atari 2600 port features several variations including steerable balls and break-through modes.
Controls: Move the paddle using the â â keys (Player 1). Press Spacebar as the trigger to serve the ball. Press Alt+L to toggle between paddle and joystick modes. Use F11 to select your game variation and F12 to start or reset.
Tips
- Aim for a breakthrough: Focus on chipping a hole straight through a single column of bricks. Once the ball gets trapped behind the wall, it will bounce wildly and destroy multiple bricks for you.
- Control the angle: Hitting the ball with the outer edges of your paddle will send it flying at a much sharper angle, which is useful for reaching the far corners of the screen.
