Game description:

Experience an early build of gaming history with the Sonic the Hedgehog (Prototype) for the Sega Genesis. Developed by Sonic Team, this pre-release version of the iconic 1991 platformer offers a fascinating glimpse into the game’s development. While it features the classic high-speed gameplay and familiar zones, players will notice distinct differences from the final retail release, including altered level layouts, early sprites, and unused elements like the rolling ball traps in Green Hill Zone.

How to play

The objective remains the same: guide Sonic through each zone, collect rings, and defeat Dr. Robotnik’s badniks. Use the following default Sega Genesis controls in your browser:

  • D-Pad (Arrow Keys): Move Sonic left or right, look up, or duck down.
  • A / B / C (Z / X / C): Jump or perform a spin attack by rolling into a ball while running.
  • Start (Enter): Pause the game.

Tips

  • Explore carefully: Muscle memory from the final game might trick you. Watch out for changed enemy placements and different level layouts.
  • Keep your rings: Just like the final version, holding at least one ring will protect you from losing a life when taking damage.
