ToeJam & Earl is a highly original 1991 action-roguelike developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions for the Sega Genesis. You play as two funky aliens who have crash-landed on a totally un-funky planetโEarth. To return to their home world of Funkotron, players must navigate through randomly generated floating islands, avoiding bizarre earthlings like hula dancers and crazy dentists, while searching for the ten missing pieces of their Righteous Rapmaster Rocketship. Its distinctive mix of slow-paced exploration, unique humor, and an unforgettable funk soundtrack makes it a standout classic of the 16-bit era.
How to Play
Your objective is to search each level for the elevator to the next stage, uncovering the map and looking for your ten missing spaceship pieces.
- D-pad (Arrow keys): Move around the map.
- A Button (Z): Sneak to get past sleeping earthlings.
- B Button (X): Open the present menu.
- C Button (C): Use the currently selected present.
- Start (Enter): Pause the game and check your map.
Tips
- Test presents safely: The effects of wrapped presents are randomized every playthrough. Try to open an unidentified present in a safe area, just in case it contains something dangerous like the Total Bummer or Tomato Rain.
- Use the terrain: Most earthlings cannot cross water. If you are being chased, using Icarus Wings or Spring Shoes to cross gaps and water hazards is an easy way to escape.
- Beware the hula dancers: They might seem harmless, but getting too close will force your character to dance, leaving you completely vulnerable to other enemies.
