Game description:

Madou Monogatari I is a first-person dungeon crawler RPG developed by Compile and released for the Sega Genesis in 1996. Standing as the final official release for the Japanese Mega Drive, the game follows six-year-old Arle Nadja as she attempts to scale a dangerous, monster-filled tower to pass her magic school’s final exam.

How to Play

Explore the tower’s labyrinthine floors from a first-person perspective. When you encounter a monster, the game shifts to a 2D side-scrolling battle screen. Unlike traditional RPGs, combat requires you to input fighting game-style directional commands and button presses to cast spells. Use the D-pad (mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys) to move, and the A, B, and C buttons (typically mapped to the Z, X, and C or A, S, and D keys) to execute actions. Press Start (Enter) to pause or access menus.

Tips

  • Practice Arle’s spell commands early on; successfully casting magic requires precise directional inputs combined with button holds, rather than simple menu selections.
  • Because the battle system blends turn-based mechanics with real-time execution, try to input your spell commands quickly to keep the pressure on enemies.
